Charles Michel, president of the European Council, said that this is now the time for developed countries "to pay their fair share" in mitigating the impact of a warmer planet.

Michel said in a press briefing that the European Union is also supporting decarbonization projects in developing countries, helping them to accelerate their transition to green energy and technology. He cited EU's energy transition partnership with South Africa, adding that the EU is "ready for more partnerships like this".

Michel was referring to the $8.5 billion JETP that was set up in 2021. This is a partnership between South Africa and IPG members EU, US, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, said his country is committed to its "responsible role" in the global energy market and has included the clean energy sector as its key priorities. He said the emirate has invested $50 billion in clean energy projects in over 40 countries around the world, according to a report filed by UAE broadsheet Gulf Today.

Also in Bali, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for joining forces to build a more prosperous Africa in his message for Africa Industrialization Day, which falls on Nov 20.

"On Africa Industrialization Day, let us join forces to build a more sustainable, peaceful and prosperous continent for all," said the secretary-general.

"Countries across Africa are facing a perfect storm: armed conflicts, rising food and energy insecurity, skyrocketing inflation and debt, shrinking fiscal space and mounting climate catastrophes," Guterres said.

G20 comprises 19 countries plus the European Union. The countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Indonesia also invites leaders of some countries from Asia, Africa and Europe as well as of a number of international organizations to attend.

Xinhua contributed to this report.
