Since the start of 2024, the number of tourism trains entering Xizang autonomous region has surged to a five-year high, injecting fresh economic momentum into regions along the route.
According to China Railway Qinghai-Tibet Group Co Ltd, a total of 61 Xizang-bound tourist trains have operated since 2019, with 14 departures from Xining to Lhasa this year alone, serving 7,528 passengers.
These specialized trains traverse the scenic Qinghai-Xizang and Lhasa-Nyingchi railways, offering travelers access to breathtaking destinations such as Qinghai Lake, Kunlun Mountains, Hoh Xil, Sanjiangyuan, and the iconic Potala Palace.
With increasing train services, visitor influx has stimulated local economies, enhancing hospitality, dining, and cultural industries. In Lhasa, tourists immerse themselves in Tibetan traditions, while Nyingchi has seen a near doubling in sales of its signature handicrafts.
By leveraging customized routes, Qinghai and Xizang have fostered resource-sharing and market expansion. As of June, Qinghai-Xizang Railway had operated 65 tourism trains in 2024 — a 260-percent increase — transporting over 13,000 passengers, with senior travelers making up more than 70 percent of the total. Plans are in place to launch 20 additional Xizang-bound trains, further boosting cultural and economic connectivity.
