Chambers tastes victory over Montgomery
( 2003-06-30 09:57) (Agencies)

Britain's Dwain Chambers beat world record holder Tim Montgomery and Mark Lewis-Francis to win the men's 100 metres at an international meeting on Sunday.

Chambers stormed home in 10.15 seconds against a strong head wind after an impressive start. American Montgomery (10.26) and Briton Lewis-Francis (10.28) will be among the main threats to Chambers at the world championships in Paris in August.

The European champion, who was in the outside lane and set a stadium record at Scotstoun, told the BBC: "I'm grateful for the lane and I'm slowly gaining confidence and these two (Montgomery and Lewis-Francis) are going to be my two main rivals."

American Bernard Williams eased to victory in the 200m in 20.95 seconds ahead of Britain's Christian Malcolm (21.26) and Darren Campbell (21.37). Malcolm ran a poor bend but managed to put in a strong finish to steal second place from Campbell.

American Derrick Brew clocked 45.32 seconds as he pushed Briton Daniel Caines (45.44) into second place in the 400m, with Scotland's Ian Mackie (46.13) running a personal best to finish third.Briton Iwan Thomas was a disappointing fourth.

Chris Rawlinson, who helped Britain win the European Cup in Florence last weekend after running the second-fastest 400m hurdles time in the world this year, improved on that by one-hundredth of a second as he won the event on Sunday.

His main American rival Eric Thomas fell at the first hurdle, leaving Rawlinson to set a stadium record of 48.44 seconds. Only world champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic has run faster this year after clocking 48.1 in Ostrava.

In the women's event Russia's Marina Kislova upset American veteran Gail Devers in the 100m as she won in 11.34 seconds. Britain's Joice Maduaka put on a strong finish to take third on the line in the same time, 11.50, as the disappointed Devers.

The United States topped the standings with 137 points at the international meeting that also featured Russia (113) and Britain and Northern Ireland (109).
