Eight people, including two journalists from Taiwan, were injured and one person was killed in a crash Thursday night in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, said a report on Friday.

The deceased was a driver from East China's Fujian Province.

Ho Wen-han, a cameramen with Taiwan-based Era TV, Julia Jin, also from Era TV, and Li Jun, a CCTV reporter, were all injured.

The others were staffers travelling with the group of journalists from both sides of the Taiwan Straits in an auto rally journey across China.

All have been hospitalized.

The crash happened at 10:10 pm on Thursday when one of the vehicles bumped into a pile of sand and overturned along the No 312 national road near Hami City of Xinjiang. Five other cross-country vehicles travelling behind the overturned car then run into each other, partially due to their fast speed.

The group was made up of reporters from 16 news organization from across the Taiwan Straits. They started the journey from East China's Fujian Province on June 17 and planned to end the trip in Xinjiang on July 12.

Road accidents have been a growing problem in China.

A separate report said that 54 people, 52 of them minors, were injured in a pileup on Guangzhou-Foshan freeway Thursday afternoon.

Local sources said that a microbus collided with a car around 2 pm on Thursday at one exit of an expressway near Shayong. Shortly afterwards, two other buses with primary school students aboard came from the direction of Guangzhou. As they attempted to avoid the two vehicles parked at the site of the previous collision, one of the buses ran into the back of the car in front of it.

The injured are 52 pupils from Jiangmen City, also in Guangdong Province, and one driver, and one tour guide.

It is reported that a total of 5,146 people were killed in highway accidents in south China's Guangdong Province in the first six months of this year, up 7.66 per cent from the same period last year.
