Bounce的原意是用力撞擊某人或某物使其反彈。早在1387年,"beat and bounce" 就被廣泛使用,并一直延續(xù)到16世紀。斯賓塞的Faerie Queene中就使用了這個短語: "And wilfully him throwing on the gras/ Did beat and bounse his head and brest full sore."
話說回來,bouncing baby boy 原來是指充滿活力、不太安靜,喜歡制造一點噪音的的寶寶,其暗含意思是說孩子非常健壯,不象體弱的孩子那樣不怎么動彈。這個說法之所以沿用到今天,有如此強的生命力,大概是因為它的頭韻押的太棒了(都以 "B" 開頭)。托馬斯-弗勒在他1662年所寫的The History of the Worthies of England中也借用過這個說法: "...Elmeby...where this bouncing babe Bonner was born."
