Bounce的原意是用力撞擊某人或某物使其反彈。早在1387年，"beat and bounce" 就被廣泛使用，并一直延續(xù)到16世紀。斯賓塞的Faerie Queene中就使用了這個短語: "And wilfully him throwing on the gras/ Did beat and bounse his head and brest full sore."
話說回來，bouncing baby boy 原來是指充滿活力、不太安靜，喜歡制造一點噪音的的寶寶，其暗含意思是說孩子非常健壯，不象體弱的孩子那樣不怎么動彈。這個說法之所以沿用到今天，有如此強的生命力，大概是因為它的頭韻押的太棒了（都以 "B" 開頭）。托馬斯-弗勒在他1662年所寫的The History of the Worthies of England中也借用過這個說法: "...Elmeby...where this bouncing babe Bonner was born."
