The Office of U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) on Tuesday published a proposed list of Chinese goods subject to additional 25 percent tariffs amid strong opposition from China and U.S. business groups.

The proposed list covers approximately 1,300 products imported from China, including industries such as aerospace, information and communication technology, robotics, and machinery, the USTR's Office said in a statement, noting they're worth approximately 50 billion U.S. dollars of annual trade value.

There's a 60-day period when the public can provide feedback and the government holds hearings on the tariffs.

China strongly condemns and firmly opposes the U.S. tariff proposals and is ready to take counter measures on U.S. products, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Wednesday.

商務(wù)部新聞發(fā)言人表示，美方不顧中方的嚴(yán)正交涉，毫無事實(shí)依據(jù)，公布征稅建議，是典型的單邊主義和貿(mào)易保護(hù)主義做法，中方強(qiáng)烈譴責(zé)，堅(jiān)決反對。

"Disregarding strong representations by China, the United States announced the tariff proposals that are completely unfounded, a typical unilateralist and protectionist practice that China strongly condemns and firmly opposes," according to the statement.

他表示，美方做法嚴(yán)重違反了世貿(mào)組織的基本原則和精神，中方擬立即將美方有關(guān)做法訴諸世貿(mào)組織爭端解決機(jī)制。

“我們將根據(jù)《中華人民共和國對外貿(mào)易法》相關(guān)規(guī)定，準(zhǔn)備對美產(chǎn)品采取同等力度、同等規(guī)模的對等措施。這些措施，近日將會公布。”商務(wù)部新聞發(fā)言人說，我們有信心、有能力應(yīng)對美方任何貿(mào)易保護(hù)主義措施。

China plans to immediately bring relevant U.S. practice to the dispute settlement body of the WTO, and is ready to take counter measures on U.S. products with equal force and scale that will be published in the coming days.

"We have the confidence and ability to respond to any U.S. trade protectionist measures," the spokesperson said.

I must stress again that the US side released the proposed tariff list in disregard of China's stern representations and on the basis of no facts. China strongly condemns and firmly opposes such a move which is typical of unilateralism and trade protectionism.

美方此舉罔顧40年來中美經(jīng)貿(mào)合作互利共贏的本質(zhì)，罔顧兩國業(yè)界的呼聲和消費(fèi)者的利益，不利于美國國家利益，不利于中國國家利益，也不利于全球經(jīng)濟(jì)利益。

The US side neglected the mutually beneficial nature of the 40-year-old China-US economic cooperation. It turned a deaf ear to the voices of the business communities and ignored the interests of consumers from the two sides. Such a move is in the national interest of neither the US nor China, and it is bad for the global economy.

What the US did severely violates the basic principles and spirit of the WTO. The Chinese side will immediately refer this wrong move by the US side to the WTO dispute settlement system. Meanwhile, in accordance with the relevant stipulations of the Foreign Trade Law of the People's Republic of China, we will take proportionate measures of the same intensity and scale on US products. These measures will be announced soon. We have the confidence and capability to counter any measure of trade protectionism taken by the United States.

As the Chinese saying goes, it is only polite to reciprocate. The Chinese side will resort to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism and take corresponding measures of equal scale and strength against US products in accordance with Chinese law.

We hope that the US side, with sense and long-term picture in mind, refrain from going further down the wrong path.
